BAFAB: The Genesis Story

Motherhood has made me a light sleeper. This can have its disadvantages, as was clear the night we allowed our elder daughter to have a sleepover and her "whispers" half a house away kept me awake and writhing in righteous maternal anger. But there are obvious advantages as well: the kid sick or lonely in the middle of the night, the alarm signaling an air conditioner malfunction, or, hypothetically, the tinkling glass or wary treads of an intruder. An alarm of a different sort woke me in the middle of the night in June of 2005, the sound of a driving torrent of urine beating against the inner layers of my younger daughter's diaper as she slept, oblivious, a foot or two from where I lay. Even befogged I knew that no absorbent material known to man could hold that much liquid, and I acted at once to forestall an emergency change of sheets.

Of course, once your heart rate has doubled in response to an emergency of this magnitude, it's difficult to calm down enough to fall back asleep. And I didn't, not for some time. Not, in fact, until I'd completely mapped out in my black-and-white-speckled composition book my plans for a new, well, a new series of book-related minor holidays that would promote reading and book-buying and good karma all at the same time. I think big in the middle of the night. Thus buyafriendabook.com--"BAFAB"--was born, the web site that urges people to surprise a friend with a book during any of four quarterly "Buy a Friend a Book Weeks" a year (the first weeks of January, April, July, and October). Enjoy the read.
